MTTR, MTBF and Availability Calculator

How often does this asset fail, and how long does it take to fix?

This calculator needs JavaScript. You can still read how the numbers are worked out below, including a worked example.

MTBF, MTTR and availability formulas

MTBF = operating hours ÷ number of failures

MTTR = total repair time ÷ number of failures

Availability = MTBF ÷ (MTBF + MTTR)

Worked example

A pump ran 2,000 hours in a quarter, broke down 4 times, and repairs took 24 hours in total.

MetricCalculationResult
MTBF2,000 ÷ 4500 hours
MTTR24 ÷ 46 hours
Availability500 ÷ (500 + 6)98.8%

Cutting repair time by 25% (MTTR 4.5 hours) would raise availability to 99.1%.

How to improve each one

  • Raise MTBF (fewer failures): preventive maintenance on schedule, condition monitoring on critical rotating equipment, and fixing repeat failures at the root.
  • Cut MTTR (faster repairs): instant breakdown alerts, the asset's repair history and SOPs on the technician's phone, and the right spares in stock.

Where to get accurate numbers

MTBF and MTTR are only as good as your maintenance records. Every breakdown needs a start time, an end time and a cause. A CMMS such as PlantOps360 records these from each work order and shows MTTR, MTBF and failure trends on a dashboard, with no spreadsheet needed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for MTBF?
MTBF equals total operating hours divided by the number of failures in the same period.
What is the formula for MTTR?
MTTR equals the total time spent repairing an asset divided by the number of repairs.
How do you calculate availability from MTBF and MTTR?
Availability equals MTBF divided by the sum of MTBF and MTTR.
What is a good MTBF?
There is no universal number. It depends on the asset type and duty. Track MTBF for each asset over time and compare similar assets with each other.
What is the difference between MTBF and MTTF?
MTBF is used for repairable equipment. MTTF (mean time to failure) is used for parts that are replaced rather than repaired, such as bearings or bulbs.
Should operating hours include repair time?
No. Use the time the asset was actually running. Repair time is counted separately in MTTR.
